Haverstraw Community and City Information
Haverstraw is a village located in the town of Haverstraw in Rockland County, New York. It is about 35 miles away from New York City. Haverstraw is separated from its southern neighbors by the mountains of the High Tor State Park.
Haverstraw is an urban waterfront community located along the Hudson River overlooking nearby Westchester County. The main routes passing through the village are Route 202 and Route 9W. Haverstraw has recently seen new major developments of luxurious living units at the waterfront community of Harbors At Haverstraw.
According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 Haverstraw has a population of more than 10,000 residents. The village has a total area of 5.1 square miles with 3.1 square miles of water. It is located at a slight elevation of over 30 feet above sea level.
The racial demographics of Haverstraw are 46.02% White, 12.07% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 34.70% from other races, and 5.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race make up more than half of the population.
Haverstraw has more than 2,500 households. The median income for a household in the village is $42,683, and the median income for a family is $44,881.
There is a ferry service between Haverstraw and Ossining (Westchester County) operated by NY Waterway. The ferry connects to Metro North train routes, which run all the way to Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan. There is also service provided by NY Water Taxi, which travel to Yonkers and midtown/lower Manhattan on commuter and tour trips. Bus service in Haverstraw is provided by the Transportation of Rockland (TOR.)
Haverstraw is served by the North Rockland Central School District and is home to Gerald Neary Elementary School and Haverstraw Middle School. The Haverstraw King’s Daughter Public Library is another major educational center.
Recreation in Haverstraw is available at the Bowline Point Town Park, a peninsula on the Hudson River with scenic views that includes tennis, playground, swimming pool, trails, and fishing pier. The nearby 27 acre Haverstraw Bay County Park is also a waterfront park and offers lots of similar activities.
